Iron Shirt Cultural & Heritage Society

Who we are

The Iron Shirt Culture and Heritage Society is a grassroots organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and revitalizing the culture, traditions and heritage of the Piikani Nation, which is part of the Blackfoot Confederacy in southern Alberta, Canada.

As a non-profit society, we host cultural events, create educational programs and build collaborations that strengthen the cultural identity and knowledge of the Piikani culture to ensure our rich cultural legacy is passed down to future generations.

The Kiosk

Our Kiosk Project is an initiative honouring thousands of years of Blackfoot tradition on the Piikani nation, mapping sacred archaeological sites while highlighting their spiritual and cultural importance. By making this information accessible to the general public, the Kiosk is a vitally important bridge between Piikani culture and others, celebrating our heritage while raising awareness, creating connections and preserving knowledge for future generations.

What is Piikanissini?

Piikanissini encompasses the history, cultural values, principles and way of life of the Akaa Piikani, the ancient Piikani people.

The Akaa Piikani were part of the Siksikatsiitapiwa, or Blackfoot People. Since time immemorial, Siksikatsiitapiwa territory has been the North Saskatchewan River to the north, Great Sand Hills to the east, Yellowstone River to the south and the Continental Divide to the west. This land was given to us by Istipatahyopi, the Source of Life, to coexist with all creation.

Piikanissini connects us deeply with our ancestral land and beliefs through stories, songs and ceremonies. It embodies the essence of our Piikani identity, ensuring that our rich cultural heritage and traditions are respected and preserved for generations.
